Know Before You Go

• If you are in Buenos Aires on a Sunday, head to the San Telmo Market. You'll find some of the city's best antiques on sale, as you enjoy the soulful singing of Gardelito.
• Just like in some European countries, meal times happen later in Buenos Aires. Lunch is between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and restaurants close until 7 p.m. for siesta. If you want to eat with the locals, plan on going out to dinner after 10 p.m.
• If you pay for something with your credit card, you'll need to write your full ID number under your name each time. You'll also need your ID with you to be able to pay for a purchase with a card.
• ATMs in Buenos Aires only let you take out USD 200 at a time. You'll also pay USD 7 for each transaction, so either bring a non-fee card with you or try to avoid paying in cash as much as possible.

Getting Around Buenos Aires

• One of the best ways to get around the city is with the subway. Known as "the subte" the underground system is quick, affordable and easy to navigate. A one-way ticket costs ARS 1.20, but if you are using the subway a lot, a multi-journey travel pass will be more cost effective. The trains run from Monday to Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
• Another affordable way to get around Buenos Aires is with the city buses. Known as colectivos, the buses run 24 hours a day with fares starting at ARS 1.10. Keep in mind that you will need the exact change to buy your ticket and that most drivers do not speak English.
• Taxis are available throughout the city and are marked with a "radio taxi" sign. The meters start at ARS 3.80 and increase by time and distance. However, drivers are known for taking tourists on longer routes. Map out your route beforehand, so you'll know if your driver is trying to overcharge you.
• With gridlocked traffic, barely visible signage and minimal parking it's not advisable to rent a car in Buenos Aires unless you are planning a day trip.

When is The Best Time to Visit Buenos Aires?

The best time to visit Buenos Aires is during its two shoulder seasons. From April to June (autumn) and September to December (spring), you'll find mild temperatures, few crowds and reasonable hotel prices. So you'll be able to avoid long lines at the city's attractions and pick up deals on tours, accommodation and flights.

The most popular time to visit is during the city's summer months. January to February is the Buenos Aires peak tourist season, and as the temperatures start to rise so do the hotel rates. While there are loads of free events during this time, the summer crowds are thick, and the city's attractions will be bursting with people. To make sure you get a decent price on your accommodation during this time, book several months in advance.

Off season is from June to August. During Buenos Aires winter months, the days are rainy with low temperatures and few tourists. Despite the chilly weather, most attractions remain open so you'll have the city to yourself if you can brave the cold. There's also the popular Buenos Aires Tango Festival in August which will warm you up and is a fantastic cultural experience.

Airports in Buenos Aires

Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport

Aeroparque Jorge Newbery is 2 km from downtown Buenos Aires. It's the main hub for domestic flights in the country as well as to South American destinations like Uruguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Paraguay.

Ezeiza Partido International Airport

Ezeiza Partido International Airport, also known as Ministro Pistarini, is 22 km from the city centre. It's the country's largest international airport and serves as a hub for Aerolíneas Argentinas and LATAM Argentina. It's considered the most important airport in Argentina and handles more than 70% of the country's international air traffic.

Getting To and From Aeroparque Jorge Newbery

Taxis from the airport into the city are affordable. The ride should cost you ARS 50 to ARS 120 and take about 15-30 minutes depending on your final destination.

Several bus routes pass Aeroparque Jorge Newbery. If you are unsure which line to take, use ComoLlego, the city's public transport website. It will tell you which bus is the most convenient to take. However, buses are usually crowded, so if you have a lot of luggage, this won't be the best choice.

Another option is to take the Manuel Tiendo Leon shuttle bus. It leaves the airport every hour and will drop you off at their terminal in the city. From here you'll need to switch to a taxi to get to your final destination.
