Flight Guide from Nelson to Warsaw

Need to know

Gothic and steeped in history, Warsaw is a site of constant reinvention - a fascinating place with an even more fascinating past. The capital of Poland and its largest city, Warsaw is a city full of striking contrasts.

Warsaw’s Old Town is a prime tourist spot. Originally dating back to the 13th century, it was almost completely destroyed in World War II, and between 1945 and 1951 was meticulously restored to its former glory. Take a stroll around the Old Town Market Square to see the beautiful architecture up close. The Royal Castle is one of Warsaw's most recognisable landmarks that was almost completely destroyed in the failed Warsaw Uprising. Also worth a visit is the Wilanow Palace. Dating back to 1677, it is a beautiful baroque building which has miraculously survived two world wars virtually unscathed.

Other attractions to add to your list include the Copernicus Science Centre and the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Built on the site of the Warsaw Ghetto, it traces the history of Jewish people in Poland from 1,000 years ago until the present day. Warsaw’s famous Neon Museum can be found across the river in Praga. With it’s incredible collection of Cold War-era neon signs, the museum is a must see.

Warsaw is known for its amazing nightlife, specialty vodka and strong beer. Check out the hip bars around the up-and-coming district of Praga, or head to Nowy Swiat for trendy clubs. This area is also good for fine dining and upmarket shopping. While in town, make sure you try some pierogi, starchy dumplings filled with everything from mashed potatoes to blueberries.

Getting around

If you like a scenic walk, it’s easy to get around Warsaw city centre and Old Town on foot. Those who love to cycle can make use of the Veturilo public bike rental hotspots to cycle around the city from March to November. Warsaw also has a comprehensive bus and tram system, as well as reliable metro subway services. After 11 pm, night buses run, making it easy to get home on public transport late at night.

Best Time to Visit

Warsaw has an unpredictable climate, with showery summers, plummeting winter temperatures and a przedwiosnie - an early spring during March. The winter sees heavy snowfall and temperatures can get as low as -20 degrees. The spring months from April to June are the best time to visit Warsaw when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent.
