- Kiwis do not need a visa to visit Canada. However, you will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation. It costs CAD 7, and you can do the entire process online. It's recommended to start your application before you book your flights and most applicants get approved within minutes or a couple of days.
- You can't buy alcohol at the grocery store. Canada regulates the sale of booze, with the LCBO being the sole proprietor in Toronto. If you want to buy a bottle or two, find out the hours of your local LCBO and don't be surprised if there's a line.
- Expect delays on the TTC. Due to construction and poor city planning, public transport in the city doesn't always run on time. Give yourself enough time to get to your next destination by leaving early.
- Canada has its own currency. The country calls it's CAD 1 coin a loonie and a CAD 2 a toonie. It's a good idea to keep some change on you especially if you'll be using the public transportation system.
- There is a tipping culture in Toronto. It's encouraged to leave behind at least an 18-20% tip when dining out.
Getting Around Toronto
The best way to get around Toronto is to take the subway. You'll miss the city's gridlocked traffic, and it's an affordable option for budget travellers. The trains run every few minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. from Monday to Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Sundays. A single ride on the subway costs CAD 3.35, and you can also buy a day pass for CAD 12.50.
Hop on board one of the buses or streetcars. While it's not the fastest option, the routes will take you to the places in the city where the subway can't go. Most of the streetcars operate 24 hours a day and the buses run from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. every day.
If you want to visit the Toronto Islands, you'll need to use the ferry. Tickets cost CAD 7.71, and the service departs from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in downtown Toronto.
Hail a taxi down from the street, but it's not cheap. The fares quickly add up due to the city's infamous traffic jams, and it's not the fastest way to move between two locations.
While Toronto is a big city, it's neighbourhoods like Guildwood are easy to explore on foot. You can also hire a bike from one of the 300 stations for only CAD 7.
When is The Best Time to Visit Toronto?
The best time to visit Toronto is during its two shoulder seasons. From April to May and September to October, you'll miss the summer crowds and still be able to enjoy good weather before the winter chill sets in. Hotel rates and airfare prices also start to slump in these months, and it won't be difficult to find deals if you're travelling on a budget.
June to August is Toronto's brief summer period. The warm weather attracts travellers from near and far, driving up prices for accommodation. But if you don't mind the crowds, you'll be in time for the city's festival season. Pride Week and Caribana are some of the most popular events to attend.
If you want to escape the crowds, plan your trip to Guildwood, Toronto between November and March. The city's winter months bring in freezing temperatures and snow, keeping most visitors away. But if you can brave the cold, you'll experience a different side of the city, and there's still plenty of events worth checking out.
