Suva is located on the southeastern corner of Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu. The Fijian capital sits on a hilly peninsula, its lush palm trees overlooking the blue waters of the South Pacific. Suva is considered the political and commercial heart of Fiji—perhaps one of the perks of being the largest city in South Pacific.
Suva is bordered by mountains to the north and west, while the coast is lined by mangroves, rather than sand or cliffs. Suva’s reputation as the wettest city in Fiji is well deserved, receiving an average monthly rainfall of 250 millimetres—almost five times that of Melbourne. The resulting landscape is one of stunning green hills and vibrant tropical plants. Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, which begins just 9 km north of the city, is a quiet haven of creeks, waterfalls, swimming holes and walking tracks.
With a significant number of expats, Indigenous peoples, and students from across the Pacific region, there’s no doubt that Suva is a vibrant and multicultural city. Suva contains everything from modern shopping malls and fine restaurants to backstreet sari shops, curry houses, and vendors peddling handmade goods. Learn about the nation’s history and culture at the Fiji Museum, pick up fresh fruit, vegetables and fish at Suva Municipal Market, and admire the colonial architecture of landmarks such as Government House (Presidential Palace) and the Suva City Carnegie Library.
In a city the size and pace of Suva, parking can be difficult to come by during peak hours (Saturdays and weekday afternoons). However, getting around the city is still very manageable. Taxis are the most convenient option and will get you to your destination for a very fair price. Alternatively, the local buses are an even more affordable option—however, it’s worth having a good idea of where you’re going, as there’s no guarantee that the driver (or other passengers) will be able to assist you. You can also find buses travelling to all parts of the island from the main bus station, which is located next to Suva Municipal Market.
Suva enjoys a tropical climate with only minor changes in temperature throughout the year. Visiting Suva between May and October will allow you to enjoy the coolest and driest conditions that Suva can offer. That said, it’s still best to be prepared for a fair amount of rain, and for temperatures to largely stay above 20 degrees.
Those looking to avoid peak season prices should aim to visit Suva in October and November, either side of which you’ll find higher prices and busier resorts due to the Australian and New Zealand school holidays.
Nausori International Airport is located in the town of Nausori, about 23 km from Suva. Flights travel to Nausori International Airport from a number of destinations, including Auckland, Nadi, Port Vila, Vanuabalavu and Taveuni. A taxi or bus ride from Nausori Airport to the centre of Suva will take approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
