Know Before You Go

• Go sightseeing with a bicycle. The city has more than 800 km of paths, and more than 150,000 locals commute every day to work with a bike.
• You can only buy alcohol from the government-run Systembolagets. The establishments are open between 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. You'll also need a valid ID and be at least 20 years old.
• Download the SL app for public transportation around the city. It has interactive maps to help you plan your route, and you can use the app to buy your tickets for the metro, bus and tram network.
• If you're paying with a credit card, you have to input the amount and your pin. While it's easy enough to do, be mindful that you type in the correct amount to avoid any mishaps.
• Hostels charge extra for sheets. If you're staying in the city for just the night, it can make your stay quite expensive. Confirm before you book what the additional cost will be, so you're prepared.

Getting Around Stockholm

The metro is one of the best ways to get around Stockholm. It has more than 100 stations and runs daily between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. Tickets for zone 1 cost SEK 36 and are valid for two hours. If you're going to be using the system a lot, you can also buy a travel card. A 24-hour pass costs SEK 115, and a 72-hour pass will set you back SEK 230.

Hop on board the local bus if you'll be visiting areas outside of the metros reach. There are also night services running into the early hours of the morning, which offer travellers a cheaper alternative to taxis.

A scenic alternative to the bus is Stockholm's ferry service. It runs past the Djurgarden and Hammarby Sjostad islands and admission is included if you purchase a travel card. Otherwise, you can buy your tickets at the quay.

If you want to see the city at your own pace, hire a bicycle. It costs SEK 250 per day, and there are lanes running past most of Stockholm's popular attractions.

Taxis are the most expensive way to get around Stockholm. If you decide to get one, make sure your cab has a yellow licence plate to avoid being ripped off.

When is The Best Time to Visit Stockholm?

The best time to visit Stockholm is during its summer months. From June to August, the city is warm and days are at their longest with the sun only setting at 10:00 p.m. You'll also be around for Midsummer, one of the country's biggest celebrations. The only downside is that good weather makes it one of the most expensive times to visit the city. Lock in low hotel rates by booking your trip a few months in advance.

If you're looking to escape the summer crowds, plan your trip for the fall. Between September and November, the city empties out and you'll catch the tail-end of the warm temperatures before the winter chill sets in.

From December to February, there are only a few hours of sunlight a day, keeping most visitors away. If you can handle that as well as the freezing temperatures, you'll be rewarded with cheap flights and Stockholm's famous Christmas markets.

For a happy medium between summer and winter, try spring. Between March and May, the temperatures start to rise, as well as the hotel prices. The summer crowds have yet to arrive, so you'll have the city's top attractions to yourself.

Airports in Stockholm

There are four airports in Stockholm. The main airport used for international traffic is Stockholm Arlanda, followed by Bromma Airport for domestic flights. The final two airports, Vasteras and Skavsta, are located 100 km from the city centre.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport

Located 40 km from Stockholm, Arlanda is the largest airport in Sweden. It serves more than 20 million passengers each year and is a hub for Norwegian Air Shuttle and Scandinavian Airlines.

Getting to and from Arlanda Airport

Take the train. There is an express service that leaves the airport every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes at night. The journey takes 20 minutes and terminates at Stockholm Central Station. You can also take the commuter train that departs the airport every 30 minutes and is slightly cheaper.

Hop on board the bus. Flygbussarna Airport Coaches run between Stockholm C and the airport every 10 minutes during the day. Flixbus, another coach service also services the airports with 2-3 stops a day.

Grab a taxi. You'll find the drivers waiting outside of the Arrivals Terminal. Before you start your journey, ask the driver if the company applies fixed prices from the airport. A ride should cost you between SEK 450 - 500.
