Getting Around Split

Split is a pedestrian-friendly destination and much of the city easily seen just on foot. Cars are not permitted in the old town or inside the Diocletian’s Palace. Don’t expect many public transport options in Split; services are mainly limited to buses. Taxis can be found at dedicated taxi stations, and those with a rental car can leave their vehicle in the large parking lot outside the city’s main walls.

When is the Best Time to Book Cheap Flights to Split?

The best time to visit Split are either side of the peak summer months. Tourists swarm into Split from June to August and accommodation prices, flights and rental car rates tend to spike as a result. Time your Split travel for May, September or October to enjoy fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures. Split Resnik Airport (SPU)

The Split Resnik Airport (SPU) is located around 20 kilometres from the city. Located on the west side of Kastela Bay, Split Resnik Airport (SPU) is the second busiest airport in Croatia. As Split’s public transport services are limited to local buses, the easiest and most convenient way of travelling from the airport to the city is by jumping into a taxi, renting a car, or waiting for the airport shuttle bus. The latter departs approximately every 30 minutes.

What to do in Split

The Diocletian Palace

It isn’t hard to find your way to the Diocletian Palace. For one, it occupies a premium patch of Split real estate by the harbour. The ruins of the limestone-and-marble Palace also form a bulk of Split’s old town; restaurants, cafes, apartments and shops have all popped up within buildings that sit inside the fortress’ walls. While the Palace is an undeniable beauty during the day, it becomes even more enchanting in the evening when illuminated.

Cathedral of Saint Domnius

The Cathedral of Saint Domnius, or the St. Duje Cathedral as it is known locally, was built to honour the first Bishop of Salona. The cathedral makes up a wider church complex, complete with bell tower and a mausoleum where the Emperor Diocletian was once interred. Travellers are welcome to climb to the top of the soaring bell tower and are rewarded with gorgeous panoramas of the city. A ticket to see inside the cathedral also includes access to the crypt, treasury and Temple of Jupiter.

Peristyle Square

As with much of Split’s architecture, this square actually makes up a part of the Diocletian Palace. This courtyard was rebuilt by Split’s citizens to mimic its use in ancient times: the formal entrance to the palace. The Square is now a gathering point for locals and visitors alike, and is also used as a theatre and stage for plays, opera performances and concerts.

Temple of Jupiter

Another sight located within the boundaries of the Diocletian Palace. Once dedicated to the King of the Roman gods, the Temple of Jupiter is now a wonderfully preserved look back into the history of Split. Homages to Jupiter have been replaced with a bronze statue of St. John the Baptist. To see the temple, take the narrowest street from the Peristyle Square.
