Getting Around Phoenix

The best way to get around Phoenix is to hire a car. Most of the city's top attractions are far apart, and a vehicle will come in handy if you are planning to visit nearby destinations such as Sedona or go on one of the many scenic drives. You can rent a car from the airport or from one of the agencies in the city.

If you'd prefer to avoid dealing with Phoenix's traffic yourself, you can take one of the public buses. Fares start at USD 2, and you can get an all-day pass for USD 4. The only problem is that the service isn't extensive and can't be relied on to take you across the city's 400 square miles.

Try one of the free shuttle services. There are several that operate within the greater Phoenix area and stop by the main attractions. The Scottsdale Trolley and the Downtown Area Shuttle are some of the most useful to tourists.

Use the light rail service to get between Phoenix's suburbs and the CBD. It stops at many of the city's main attractions such as the Phoenix Art Museum, the Heard Museum, Chase Field, Talking Stick Resort Arena and Tempe's Mill Avenue District.

Hail a taxi. While the fares aren't cheap, it's an easy and comfortable way to get around Phoenix. The city also has ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft, with slightly lower prices than their metered counterparts. 

When is The Best Time to Visit Phoenix?

The best time to visit Phoenix is from November to April. While many of the other states are experiencing cold conditions, Phoenix's weather is at it's best. The unbearable heat of the summer is gone, but it's still warm enough for outdoor activities.

The only downside to this period are the prices. Flights and accommodation skyrocket as travellers descend upon the city to escape the winter chill. If you want to avoid this, visit Phoenix at the beginning or end of the season and for cheaper rates.

May to October is when Phoenix experiences it's infamous dry heat. If you head outside, you'll need to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and pack on the sunscreen to avoid sunburn. But if you can handle Phoenix's extreme weather, you'll find better deals on flights and accommodation.

The city also experiences monsoon season at the end of summer. It's ideal if you want reasonable prices, a reprieve from the heat and to watch Phoenix's iconic lighting storms.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Located 4.8km from downtown Phoenix, Sky Harbour is Arizona's largest and busiest airport. It serves more than 100 domestic and international destinations and has over 500 non-stop flights a day.

Getting to and from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

The best way to get from Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport is with the PHX Sky Train. It runs from the arrivals terminal to the 44th Street/Washington Street station. From there you can transfer to a taxi or take a bus to your final destination.

A more convenient way to get to your hotel is with a cab. The taxi stand is outside of the arrivals terminal, and the service operates 24 hours a day. The first mile will cost you USD 5 and goes up by USD 2.30 for each additional mile. If you don't want to use the metered cabs, you can also use the airport's WiFi to request a ride with Uber or Lyft.

If you want to hire a car, you'll need to head to the Rental Car Center. It's where you'll find all the rental counters and their vehicles. You will need to make a reservation beforehand, as the airport limits the number of walk-in customers.
