There are lots of iconic landmarks dotted along the city’s famous skyline. The Statue of Liberty stands tall at the edge of the Hudson River as a symbol of hope, freedom and opportunity. Next to it stands historic Ellis Island, once the gateway for over 12 million immigrants. For the best views of New York’s spectacular cityscape, head to the open-air observation deck on the Empire State Building, or take an early morning walk along the Brooklyn Bridge. The bright lights, neon signs and pumping advertisements of Times Square shine night and day as cars and yellow taxi cabs fight their way past thousands of passersby. Visit Broadway, the home of the musical, or peruse the many eateries, restaurants and lively bars nearby. All-night coffee houses serve up late night bagels, New York-style reuben sandwiches are always on the lunch menu, and the best pizza in the city can be found on any number of street corners.

Head to Central Park to unwind in the afternoon. A number of gorgeous buildings line the outskirts of the park, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. The New York Public Library can be found in Bryant Park, just around the corner from the world-renowned Fifth Avenue—the best place to spend on high-end fashion and big-name brands.

Getting around

In terms of atmosphere, walking around New York City is an unbeatable way to get around. Manhattan is the easiest borough to explore on foot, but it’s possible to do so in all five boroughs. The subway is usually the best mode of public transport to use, running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so you’ll never miss the last train. Buses in the city are very reliable, but they are subject to New York’s constant traffic jams. Although the same goes for taxi cabs, at least hiring a cab should prevent you from getting lost.
 

The Best Time to Visit NYC

New York has four distinct seasons, each showcasing another facet of the city’s personality. The spring months (March to May), are a great time to visit as the temperature begins to warm up and flowers blossom all over the city. New York is prone to showers at this time of year, so remember to dress accordingly. July and August are popular times to visit, but it does get very hot and the city can become slick with humidity. Book your holiday in the months of September or October to enjoy the last of the summer heat. Christmas is also a beautiful time to be in New York City, as the department store windows along Fifth Avenue are decorated and the ice skating rink outside of the iconic Rockefeller Center comes out. Hotels and flights can be very pricey around this time, so if you’re looking for a cheaper winter break, it might be best to book your trip for January.
