Nauru Guide

What should I know before visiting Nauru?

Book your accommodation well in advance

Nauru is a tiny country at only 21 square kilometres (8 square miles) in area. While this means the island is easy to explore after flights to Nauru, it also means there are limited hotels available. When you book airfare to Nauru, get your hotel booked as early as possible to make sure you get your first choice of accommodation.

Change money before your return flights to Nauru

Once you have landed at Nauru International Airport (INU), you’ll find few opportunities to change money. Credit cards are also not widely accepted across the island. To make sure you’ll have money to use, exchange cash before catching your flights to Nauru. The official currency of Nauru is the Australian dollar, so you’ll have no trouble converting currency at most major banks or currency exchange shops in NZ.

Apply for a visa before catching your flights to Nauru

New Zealanders are required to have a visa in order to visit Nauru. Visas can take several weeks to process, so make sure to apply at least a month before your return flights to Nauru. In order to apply for a visa, you will need to email the Nauruan Embassy in Wellington for the official form. While submitting the visa application, you will also need to include several forms of documentation, including confirmation of a hotel booking, travel insurance, and plane tickets to Nauru.

What are the best things to do in Nauru?

Anibare Bay

There are several beautiful beaches to visit when you travel with airfare to Nauru. One of the most scenic beaches is Anibare Bay on the eastern side of the island. Anibare Bay consists of a sprawling beach and striking rock formations peeking out of the water. Like much of Nauru, Anibare Bay is very quiet and has a secluded feel to it. It’s the perfect place to relax after your cheap flights to Nauru. The water alongside the beach is shallow and features some beautiful coral reefs that you can explore by snorkelling. However, be careful not to venture too far from shore while enjoying water activities. Anibare Bay can experience some strong ocean currents as you get further from the shoreline.

Command Ridge

If you’d like to experience a bit of history after your cheap flights to Nauru, pay a visit to Command Ridge. In addition to being the tallest point on the island, this spot is known for playing a role in World War II. During the war, Nauru was occupied by Japan, and Japanese troops utilised the high elevation of Command Ridge to watch over the island. Today, visitors with tickets to Nauru can still see artefacts that date back to this period in history. While visiting Command Ridge, you can explore a communications bunker and see a handful of old guns and weapons that were used in the war. From this site, you’ll also be able to catch a breathtaking view over Nauru.

Yaren

Nauru doesn’t have an official capital city; however, Yaren is informally known as the central hub of the island. The Yaren District is based in the south of Nauru, right beside Nauru International Airport (INU). Yaren is home to the largest community of people in Nauru, so it is a great place to interact with locals and learn more about the Nauruan way of life. There are several landmarks to observe in Yaren, including the Parliament House and the Moqua Well caves.

When is the best time to visit Nauru?

Like many islands in the Pacific, Nauru experiences both a wet season and a dry season. Dry season lasts from March to October, making this the ideal time to plan return flights to Nauru. The wet season receives some rain, but rainstorms are rarely bad, and typhoons are infrequent in Nauru.
