Need to Know About Miami
Miami is a big, bold, brash and bright city. Clinging to the southeastern tip of Florida, Miami beckons to travellers with sun-kissed beaches, glamorous neighbourhoods, glitzy nightlife and distinctive streets featuring Art Deco buildings and pastel-hued hotels. Don’t mistake Miami for just another party city though - even though it does that very, very well. Miami’s roots are anchored in its diverse population and both Latin and European influences featured strongly in everything from the city’s cuisine, to its design and arts and entertainment scene. Miami’s beaches are one of its biggest lures and there are stretches of shorelines to suit every traveller, from buzzing strips that are teeming with bars and hotspots, to family-friendly waterfronts that have calm breaks and plenty of sand for ball games.

Getting Around Miami
There are plenty of options for travellers seeking to explore Miami once arriving in this dynamic city. The Metromover operates within Downtown Miami and has three main loops, which travel past sights including Museum Park, the Perez Art Museum Miami, and the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. The bus system connects to almost every corner of Miami; there are more than 95 routes and 1000 buses. A fare on the bus starts from $3NZD and can be purchased online or from select stations.
When is the Best Time to Book Cheap Flights to Miami?
The best time to book cheap airfares to Miami is for travel during spring. The time between March and May brings temperatures that hover between the low and mid 20 degrees Celsius. Visitors will also be sidestepping the peak winter rates, because Miami’s reputation as a destination perfect for escaping cold weather means its high season is actually during its winter - not the summer like some other American. Cheap Miami flights can be booked for the summer season, but those travelling at this time (June to August) should steel themselves for high temperatures and higher rainfall. Also take note of the Atlantic hurricane season if planning to travel from June to November.
Travelling to Miami Airport
Miami International Airport (MIA)
Formerly known as Wilcox Field, Miami International Airport is the primary airport for the Miami city area. Located 13 kilometres northwest of downtown Miami, it offers good transportation options to many parts of the city. There is a selection of private transportation, such as Uber, taxi and airport shuttles. The public transport service is the more affordable option. The orange Metrorail line travels to the airport regularly, and the Tri-Rail connects the airport with the city’s northside and West Palm Beach. A Miami Beach Bus runs every 30 minutes, offering a service between the airport and Miami Beach. A handful of Metro Bus routes also include stops at the airport - routes 37, 42, 57, J, 150 Miami Beach Airport Express, and East-West Connection.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is located 34 kilometres north of Miami. There are a couple of transport options available for travellers moving between the airport and their Miami accommodation. The Tri-Rail is available from a station at Dania Beach and a shuttle bus transports just-landed travellers from the terminals to the station. There is also a Broward County Transit service.
What to do in Miami
Miami Beach
Despite its name, Miami Beach isn’t just a beach; it’s a city that sits on a standalone island, connected to mainland Miami by a series of bridges. Make no mistake though, this island’s beaches are exceptional. South Beach is the spotlight-stealer and is known for the pack of celebrities and beautifully bronzed A-listers that frequent its nightclubs and eateries. Or, simply find a spot on one of the beaches and let the day while away.
Miami Everglades
Ready for a thrill? Hop aboard a huge airboat and zoom around the waters of the Miami Everglades, keeping your eyes peeling for alligators, crocodiles, bottlenose dolphins and maybe even the endangered Florida panther.
