Best time to visit Maui

When should you book cheap airfares to Maui?

There is no bad time to book cheap flights to Maui. Temperatures are stable and beautiful throughout the year. And while winter experiences more rain than the summer months, precipitation and humidity are still low. Summer and winter are the high seasons in Maui, and during these seasons, you’ll experience larger crowds and higher hotel prices. If you are planning to book cheap flights to Hawaii for its famous surfing, you may want to consider braving the crowds in the winter, as this is peak time for surfing in Maui.

For a quiet and relaxing holiday, the best times to book cheap airfares to Maui are in spring and autumn. Weather is warm and sunny, crowds are minimal, and prices are at their lowest. And if you are planning to drive along the Road to Hana coastal highway, autumn is the best time to do so.

Airports

Arriving in Maui

The island of Maui is home to two airports, Kahului and Kapalua. The majority of flights to Maui originate in the Hawaiian capital, so your airfares to Maui will likely include a stopover in Honolulu. Kahului Airport (OGG) is the main airport receiving flights to Maui. It is located on the north side of the island and provides easy access to hotels and towns across the island. Kapalua Airport (JHM) is a small airport in the west of Maui and operates short-haul flights to and from a few destinations around Hawaii.

Getting to your hotel from Kahului Airport (OGG)

The best option for traveling to your hotel hassle-free is to catch a shuttle from the airport. Shuttle services offer rides to hotels and accommodations in towns across the island. Shuttles run regularly throughout the day, and reservations are not required. You can simply visit the Shuttle Service counter at the airport and book on to the next shuttle departing to your area of Maui. Each shuttle passenger is allowed two suitcases and a carry-on free of charge, making this the perfect option if you are travelling with several pieces of luggage. Shuttle prices vary between $10 and $44 per person, depending how far your hotel is from the airport.

From Kahului Airport, you can catch a public bus to several locations around Maui County. There are two bus routes, the Upcountry Islander and the Haiku Islander. Each of these bus routes pick up passengers from the airport every 90 minutes. Major stops along the Upcountry Islander route include Queen Ka‘ahumanu Centre, Kulamalu Town Centre, and Hali‘imaile Park. The Haiku Islander route also makes a stop at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Centre, then continues on to Kahului Shopping Centre, Paia Town, and Haiku Marketplace. Bus fare costs $2, and there is a strict policy that luggage cannot be larger than carry-on size.

Getting to your hotel from Kapalua Airport (JHM)

As Kapalua is such a small airport, there are no public transport options to travel from the airport to your hotel. For the best rates, you can pre-book an airport transfer with a variety of taxi and shuttle companies. SpeediShuttle and Akina Tours and Transportation offer affordable rates and can drop you off to hotels all over the island of Maui.
