The best time to visit Hong Kong

The best time to visit Hong Kong is in the autumn months of October through December. Unless it’s National Day, you can expect lower crowds and be able to find cheap airfares from Auckland to Hong Kong. In the winter months of January through March, Chinese tourists flock to Hong Kong to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Hotel and flight prices usually spike during this time. Spring welcomes warmer temperatures without the humidity. Plan your trip before the national holidays if you want to avoid crowds and higher-priced flights and hotels. Summer brings high temperatures and humidity but that doesn’t sway the crowds. If you’re looking to find cheap airfares to Hong Kong, summer is not the time to travel.

Departing From Auckland

Air New Zealand, Hong Kong Airlines and Cathay Pacific offer direct flights into Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) from Auckland. The flight time lasts between 11 and 12 hours.

Getting to Auckland International Airport

Getting from the Auckland CBD to the airport takes approximately 40 minutes, but this may vary depending on time of day and traffic. The SkyBus is a popular airport transfer option as it runs seven days a week; the City Express route operates 24 hours a day. The City Express service covers two routes, along Mt Eden Road or Dominion Road, and terminates at Queen Street. The other SkyBus service travels to the North Harbour. A one-way fare starts from $18 NZD. However, if you are travelling with a group or are pressed for time, a taxi or Uber may be cheaper and faster.

Parking at Auckland International Airport

If you plan on driving yourself to the airport, it is highly recommended that you pre-book your parking prior to your arrival. Pre-booking can be arranged up to nine months prior to your departure date.

Where to Park at Auckland International Airport

Car parks at Auckland International Airport are labelled according to their coordinating terminal gate and range from covered and uncovered, economy, park and ride, and even valet services.

  • Valet parking will put you within a 1- to 2-minute walk from the terminal and options include covered or uncovered spaces.
  • Self-parking lots for international and domestic flights are spaces A, D, or E. Walk time from these parking areas to the terminal is between 2 to 3 minutes.
  • If you plan on using the Park and Ride option, you will have to take a 15-minute bus ride to the terminal. Buses run every 30 minutes.

Arriving in Hong Kong

New Zealanders with a valid passport do not need to make advanced visa arrangements to visit Hong Kong. When you arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), simply disembark and proceed to Immigration where your passport will be stamped with a visit visa.

How to Get from Hong Kong International Airport to Your Hong Kong Hotel or Accommodation

The fastest route from HKG to the city centre is via the Airport Express train. The trains run every 12 minutes and will put you in the city centre in just 24 minutes. The fare from the airport to Hong Kong Station runs $115 HKD ($22 NZD). A bus ride from the airport can take about 45 minutes. Fares vary depending on the route, but you can expect to pay about $8 NZD per passenger. Getting from HKG to the city centre can be a bit confusing if you plan on taking a taxi; the cars are colour-coded according to the areas they service. Red taxis serve urban areas, including all of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon; green taxis serve the New Territories, which is the area of land above Kowloon; blue taxis serve only Lantau Island. The green and blue taxis are great to use during your trip, but initially upon arrival, you should only need the red. Also note, flat rate fares are non-negotiable and passengers are also responsible for paying any tolls along the way.

Things to do in Hong Kong

There are plenty of outdoor attractions to fill your days with during your trip to Hong Kong. Victoria Peak is the highest mountain in Hong Kong Island. If you’re not up to making the trek up this 552-metre ascent, you can grab a taxi or wait for a cable car to take you to the summit. Once you reach the top, you’ll be treated to a view across all of greater Hong Kong. Thrill-seekers can check out Hong Kong Disneyland or Ocean Park. Both of these theme parks promise excitement and entertainment for travellers of all ages. Diehard shoppers should make a beeline for Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, where you can find a plethora of shopping opportunities and vibrant nightlife. Or those wanting to connect with their spirituality should make a point to visit Lantau Island. Here, you can pay reverence at the Po Lin Monastery, which is the home of the bronze Tian Tan Buddha. You’ll have to climb a long stairway to get close to this 34-metre-tall statue, but it is worth every step.
