Getting around

Buses are the cheapest way to get around the city, however, passengers should be aware of where they are travelling, as bus stops are usually in Cantonese and most drivers do not speak English. The subway system is a more reliable mode of transport as it serves most destinations in the city and outer suburbs, while the stations are more accommodating to travellers, with English map translations and ticketing help available. It is also possible to take the train to other major cities, such as Hong Kong and Beijing. Hiring a car isn’t advisable due to the city’s highly congested roads.

Guangzhou has a subtropical climate characterized by steamy, wet summers and a mild, sunny winter. The summer months from June to August are too hot and humid to be enjoyable, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s. It’s also best to avoid the typhoon season that hits the city at the tail end of summer, throughout August and September. The best time to visit is from October to December, when the weather is cooler but the sun is still shining. January is also a special time to visit Guangzhou as beautiful flowers blossom across the city, while the cities in the northern region remain under a layer of snow.

Located around 38 kilometres from the city centre, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is the main airport serving Guangdong province. It is the third busiest airport in China. Flights travel to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport from a number of destinations, including London, Singapore, Paris and Hanoi. There are direct flights available from Australia, with flights leaving from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.
