Situated in Southern China, Guangzhou is a vibrant centre that has grown in time to become the country’s third largest city. Offering plenty to see, do and experience, there’s no shortage of ways in which to spend time in the city.
Guangzhou is home to stunning architecture that spans centuries of social change. For amazing panoramic views of the city, take a trip to the Canton Tower. Standing 600 metres high, Canton Tower is the tallest building in China and overlooks the shimmering Pearl River. For more stunning views of Guangzhou’s natural surroundings, hike to the top of Baiyun Mountain. Also known as White Cloud Mountain, the area is a popular place to relax and take time out from the city.
From great food through to countless opportunities to shop until you drop, you’re sure to be spoilt for choice during a visit to Guangzhou. Guangzhou’s shopping scene is diverse and lively, stocking everything from fresh produce and local handicrafts through to the latest fashions and all manner of souvenirs. The city’s markets and shopping malls offer the perfect opportunity to revamp your wardrobe, discover great gifts or find items to help you remember your time in the city.
Set in the Guangdong Province, Guangzhou proves to be one the best destinations for sampling authentic Cantonese cuisine. From freshly prepared dim sum through to moorish char siu, there are plenty of delicious dishes just waiting to be sampled. Head to Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street for a mix of traditional and modern restaurants, food stores and shops. Try a bite from one of Guangzhou’s street vendors, settle in for a meal at one of the city’s restaurants or make your way to a local night market to indulge in traditional dishes.
Buses are the cheapest way to get around the city, however, passengers should be aware of where they are travelling, as bus stops are usually in Cantonese and most drivers do not speak English. The subway system is a more reliable mode of transport as it serves most destinations in the city and outer suburbs, while the stations are more accommodating to travellers, with English map translations and ticketing help available. It is also possible to take the train to other major cities, such as Hong Kong and Beijing. Hiring a car isn’t advisable due to the city’s highly congested roads.
Guangzhou has a subtropical climate characterized by steamy, wet summers and a mild, sunny winter. The summer months from June to August are too hot and humid to be enjoyable, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s. It’s also best to avoid the typhoon season that hits the city at the tail end of summer, throughout August and September. The best time to visit is from October to December, when the weather is cooler but the sun is still shining. January is also a special time to visit Guangzhou as beautiful flowers blossom across the city, while the cities in the northern region remain under a layer of snow.
Located around 38 kilometres from the city centre, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is the main airport serving Guangdong province. It is the third busiest airport in China. Flights travel to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport from a number of destinations, including London, Singapore, Paris and Hanoi. There are direct flights available from Australia, with flights leaving from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.
