St. Bartholomew's Cathedral

Construction of this cathedral dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. It was built in a Gothic style, which was popular throughout Europe during that time period. St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral was once called the Imperial Cathedral and was where the coronation of German emperors took place between 1562 and 1792. Throughout the cathedral, there are lots of intricate designs that date back hundreds of years. For an amazing view over Frankfurt, head to the top of the cathedral’s highest tower.

Eschenheimer Turm

Hundreds of years ago, Frankfurt was surrounded by a wall to keep invaders and enemies out of the city. Eschenheimer Turm was a tower along the wall that was built in 1428 to guard the northern part of the wall. While the wall itself is no longer there, you can still see the 10-storey Eschenheimer Turm, which is the city’s oldest unaltered landmark. Surrounding the Eschenheimer Turm are several modern skyscrapers, offering an interesting contrast to the history of the area. If you would like to venture into the Eschenheimer Turm, you can make a reservation for the high-end restaurant that is inside.

Goethe House and Museum

One of the most famous German writers in history was the novelist and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe grew up in Frankfurt, and you can still visit the house where he lived between 1749 and 1765. The house hasn’t been altered since Goethe lived there, so you can still see the traditional German designs that were incorporated into the architecture. In the house, you can see the writing room, which was where he penned some of his earliest works. Next to the house, you can also visit the Goethe Museum, which features artwork from the “Age of Goethe.”
