Flight Guide from Auckland to Dallas

Need to know

Situated in Northern Texas, Dallas, the USA’s ninth largest city, attracts more holidaymakers than any other city in the state. Filled with history, culture and a dash of natural beauty, it’s no wonder that travellers flock to the cosmopolitan Texan city to enjoy a holiday experience quite unlike any other in American South

With no shortage of fascinating museums and art galleries scattered throughout Dallas, there are plenty of opportunities to discover the historic and artistic sides of the city. Head to The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, from where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, to learn about the infamous event that shook the city to its core, or stop by the Dallas Museum of Art to explore expertly curated galleries. If visual arts and live performance pique your interest, the Arts District, the largest contiguous arts district in the United States, is also well worth a visit.

Beautiful at any time of the year, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens offers the perfect change of pace from Dallas’ vibrant inner city suburbs, with 66 acres of landscaped gardens just waiting to be discovered. Those travelling with children or with a keen interest for the natural sciences should also consider heading to the Texas Discovery Gardens, home to everything from live butterflies and insects through to vast organic gardens.

Of course, no visit to Dallas would be complete without sampling the local dining scene. Offering everything from classic Southern dishes through to authentic Mexican cuisine, the city’s eateries are sure to leave your tastebuds well and truly pleased. Dig in at a traditional Texan steakhouse, indulge in Southern specialities or sink your teeth into classic Tex-Mex dishes.

Getting around

Dallas is home to a decent public transport system, providing plenty of options when it comes to getting around the city. Buses, trains and a light-rail system connect Downtown with surrounding suburbs, making it easy to get around, while the Downtown area itself is quite easily navigated on foot. During peak hour, Dallas’ roads can become congested, meaning that hiring a car is a better option if you plan to spend your time primarily in the city’s outlying areas. Parking is also expensive and limited in the Downtown area so other transport options, such as taxis, buses, trains and light-rail, are well worth considering.

The best time to visit Dallas is during either spring (March, April and May) or autumn (September, October and November). During both seasons, temperatures are quite pleasant and Dallas sees fewer visitors, making it easier to get around and experience the city.

Summer (June, July and August) remains a popular time to visit the city, although the weather is generally very hot and humid, and hotel rates are high, while the winter months can see unpredictable temperatures and even periods of snowfall.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

Located around 36 km from the city centre, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is the city’s main international airport. First opened in the mid 1970s, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport now welcomes arrivals from across North America and numerous international destinations such as Beijing, Mexico City and Bogota.
