What are the top things to see and do in Christchurch?

Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Visitors with flights from Invercargill to Christchurch should visit the city’s famous Botanic Gardens. The gardens were established in 1863, when an English oak tree was first planted to celebrate Prince Albert’s marriage to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Inside the gardens, you’ll find a wide variety of New Zealand blooms, native trees, flowering gardens and conservatories with plants from around the world.

Avon River

Approximately 14 kilometres long, the Avon River flows right through Christchurch, all the way out to the Pacific Ocean. Like so much of Christchurch, its current English name can be traced back to its colonial heritage; in 1848, it was named by John Deans in honour of the Scottish Avon. However, its original Māori name is Ōtākaro, meaning ‘the place of a game’. Edwardian-style punting tours are popular on the river. You’ll be able to admire the beautiful Christchurch Botanic Gardens and the city’s quaint suburbs when you book flights from Invercargill to Christchurch and take a trip on one of the boats.

The Bridge of Remembrance

The Bridge of Remembrance is Christchurch’s main war memorial monument and was built in 1924 to commemorate those who fought in the Great War. The bridge spans the Avon River, and is a popular tourist attraction you should add to your itinerary when you book tickets to Christchurch from Invercargill. It was temporarily closed for repairs in 2013 following the Christchurch earthquake but was opened to the public again on 25 April 2016.

The Cardboard Cathedral

Although originally built as a temporary replacement for the Christ Church Cathedral - which was severely damaged by the 2011 earthquake - the Cardboard Cathedral has since become a tourist attraction in its own right. The cathedral is made of cardboard tubes and has a polycarbonate roof and shipping container walls. Its most noticeable feature is its triangular stained glass windows. Located near the city centre, and around a 10-minute walk from the Bridge of Remembrance, the Cardboard Cathedral is worth visiting when your Invercargill to Christchurch flights bring you to the city for a few days.
