Things to do in Bangkok
Wat Arun
Thailand is a country that is known for its elaborately-designed temples. One of the most popular to visit is located just 3 kilometres (1.8 miles) from the centre of Bangkok. Head across the Chao Phraya River to visit the Wat Arun Temple. The temple was named after Aruna, the god of dawn. As its namesake would suggest, the dawn is the ideal time to see the temple. The soft lighting of the early morning reflects off the porcelain and ceramic tiles of the temple, causing it to glow. You can see Wat Arun from across the river, but the best way to appreciate its beauty is to see it up close.
The Grand Palace
The Grand Palace was home to the king and his court from 1782 and 1925. While the Thai royal family no longer lives in the Grand Palace, it is still used for a variety of government events and royal ceremonies. Throughout the years the palace was occupied, kings added their own personal touches and designs to it, giving the Grand Palace the elaborate style it has today. While visiting the Grand Palace, visit the Wat Phra Kaew, which houses the famous Emerald Buddha. When you visit the palace, be aware that there is a dress code in place. Sandals, bare shoulders, and shorts are not allowed for men or women.
Bangkok National Museum
If you are interested in learning more about the history and culture of Thailand, make sure you visit the Bangkok National Museum. Throughout the museum, you’ll see a variety of exhibitions and artefacts that have had an influence on Thailand over the years. You can admire traditional Thai textiles, puppets, gold and precious stones, Khon masks, and royal funeral chariots. If you would like to take a guided tour of the museum, English-speaking tours are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Bang Krachao Gardens
While most of Bangkok is fast-paced and bursting with activity, there are some spots where you’ll feel as if you’re a world away from busy Bangkok. The Bang Krachao Gardens are located right outside the city centre beside the Chao Phraya River. Within the gardens, there are walking trails, lakes, and tropical jungle that will have you feeling like you’re in the Thai countryside. You can also view picturesque stilt houses in the river, which are unique to Thailand.
Eat Thai Street Food
Visitors to Thailand are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options. Thailand is loved around the world for its cuisine, and Bangkok is one of the best places to experience it. Throughout the city, you’ll see vendors serving up Thai specialties from stalls along the street. Street food in Bangkok is so reasonably priced that many locals even opt to eat their meals out rather than cooking at home. To ensure the highest quality, go to stalls that cook the food right in front of you, and follow the locals to their favourite spots.
