Flight Guide from Rotorua to Bali

What’s on in Denpasar?

Nyepi

Nyepi is an annual day of silence. It celebrates the Balinese-Hindu New Year, is a time to reflect and cleanse the spirit, and locals mark the day by meditating. Nyepi isn’t all about keeping silent, however; parades and celebrations are held across Bali the night before the official holiday. The exact date of Nyepi changes each year as it follows a Balinese lunar calendar, but you may be able to join in on the celebrations by booking tickets to Denpasar in March or April. Note that Bali Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) suspends flights for 24 hours around Nyepi, so plan to arrive a few days before.

Bali Arts Festival

Celebrate Bali’s culture and heritage by booking airfare to Denpasar for the Bali Arts Festival. This month-long festival kicks off with a parade and goes on to feature cultural performances that reflect the eight provinces of Bali. Events pop up in venues all across Denpasar, and there is a focus on traditional music and dance. Festival goers can also admire sculptures and art at pop-up markets as part of the goings-on. Look into cheap flights to Denpasar between mid-June and mid-July to attend.

Sanur Village Festival

Sanur is a seaside suburb in the southeast of Denpasar, and each year, the location of the Sanur Village Festival. If the festival coincides with your flights to Denpasar, you’ll find a diverse program of events celebrating the food and culture of Denpasar to partake in. The environment is always an important aspect to the Sanur Village Festival too. There are a series of talks and workshops where you can learn about different environmental impacts affecting Bali, like coral reef protection and endangered plant species. Book flights into Bali Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) for travel in late August to take part in the Sanur Village Festival.

What are Denpasar’s most famous landmarks and monuments?

Bajra Sandhi Monument

The Bajra Sandhi Monument was built to recognise the Balinese struggle for independence from the Dutch. It has 33 displays that tell the story of Bali’s journey to independence throughout the first half of the 20th century. The monument particularly focuses on a battle that took place in 1906. Learn about this aspect of Bali’s history by visiting the monument in between your return flights to Denpasar. View the exhibits and climb the monument for an expansive view over the city. Tickets to Denpasar’s Bajra Sandhi Monuments cost 30,000 IDR ($3.15 NZD).

Museum Le Mayeur

Head to Museum Le Mayeur to admire classic Balinese art while holidaying on cheap flights to Denpasar. It displays the works of artist Adrien-Jean La Mayeur de Merpres, who called Denpasar home between 1932 and 1958. Although Le Mayeur was originally from Belgium, his art became heavily influenced by the culture of his adoptive island home. His paintings feature bright colours and portray daily Balinese life. The house where the museum is located is an impressive landmark in itself – it’s a beautiful example of classic Balinese architecture with pagoda roofs, colourful tilework, and sprawling gardens.

Cemara Beach

Don’t miss out on a day at the beach when you visit Bali on flights to Denpasar. It’s no surprise that you’ll find dozens of stunning beaches around Denpasar and southern Bali. Cemara Beach is a great one to visit due to its proximity to the city. It’s located in Sanur and is easily accessible by taxi from central Denpasar. Cemara Beach is picture-perfect from its soft white sand to its palm trees to the bright blue water. There’s also a coral reef offshore, which is the perfect place to go snorkelling or diving in between return flights to Denpasar.

What should I pack for Denpasar?

No matter what time of year you book cheap flights to Denpasar for, you’ll want to pack lightweight clothing. Bring shorts, t-shirts, sandals, sunglasses, and swimsuits for your holiday. It can cool down in the evenings, so it’s also a good idea to pack a light jacket when you book flights to Denpasar. Balinese culture isn’t too conservative for tourists, but visitors are expected to dress modestly in temples. Pack some pieces that cover your shoulders and legs if temple-hopping is on your do-list when you book return flights to Denpasar. Alternatively, carry a scarf or sarong that you could use to cover up when visiting certain spots.

Sunscreen is essential for all visitors holidaying on flights to Denpasar. Opt for a reef-safe sunscreen if you’ll be swimming or snorkelling. Wet season in Bali lasts from October to April, so you’ll want to bring along an umbrella or something waterproof if you book airfare to Denpasar during this time. Finally, you’ll need an adapter to plug in your electronics. Indonesian power points accept plug types C and F.
