Chinese New Year in Kuala Lumpur

Chinese New Year is not only celebrated by the ethnic Chinese community, but all of Kuala Lumpur. Chinese New Year celebrates the beginning of the lunar calendar and the festivities last for 15 days. Although Chinese New Year is traditionally a time spent with family, there are many events that are held in Kuala Lumpur for everyone to partake in. Streets are decorated in red, considered a lucky colour, delicious Chinese feasts are eaten and firecrackers are lit to welcome in the New Year!

Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also known as the Moon Cake or Lantern Festival and originates from Chinese culture. The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates the summer harvest season of ancestors and the fall of Mongolian rule in China. During this festival, moon cakes of various flavours are eaten and during the night, children walk the streets with paper lanterns.

Deepavali in Kuala Lumpur

Deepavali, or Diwali, is celebrated by the predominantly Hindu Indians in Malaysia. A religious festival of thanksgiving, Hindus cleanse temples and homes and attend temples for prayer ceremonies. This is usually followed by celebrations that include feasts on traditional Indian food and sweets such as rice puddings and murukku, a fried flour cookie.

What to do and see in Kuala Lumpur

Little India

Little India is located on Masjid India Street, where you will find a collection of Indian shops. The shops in Little India offer authentic Indian clothing, foods and teas. Browse the various wares on display or sip some Teh Tarik, a local tea, all while listening to some upbeat Bollywood music!

Kampung Baru

Kampung Baru is Kuala Lumpur's oldest residential area. The traditional wooden houses are a world away from the modern architecture found in Kuala Lumpur. On Saturday nights you should visit the Pasar Minggu, or Sunday Market, named so because the markets are open until 1 a.m. on Sunday morning. You'll find jewellery, clothes and crafty souvenirs as well as many food stalls offering delicious traditional foods.

Batu Caves

The Batu Caves in northern Kuala Lumpur is a site of religious significance for Hindus. However, visitors are welcome to enter the caves which also house unique plants and animals. Watch out for the monkeys though, they do like to steal bags looking for food!

National Museum

The National Museum in Kuala Lumpur is an unmissable building that displays a mix of Malay and modern architecture. At the National Museum you will find vintage transport, historical artefacts, flora, fauna and arts on exhibit.

KL Tower

KL Tower is the world's fifth tallest structure and stands 421 metres high. KL Tower is a telecommunications tower, but visitors are allowed onto the observation deck for an unbeatable view of Kuala Lumpur and dine inside the revolving restaurant at the top of the tower.

Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square)

Independence Square is where the Malays announced their independence from British rule. The square is often used for tourist and national celebrations.

Agong's Palace

Agong's Palace is where Malaysia's King resides. While entry is not allowed, visitors can view the marching display that takes place everyday when Royal Guards change.

Theme Parks

For the kids, or young at heart, there are numerous theme parks to keep you occupied in Kuala Lumpur. Sunway Lagoon Theme Park is the most popular with a section dedicated to the old American West, action rides and a water park.
