Climate in Athens
Spring and Autumn are ideal seasons to visit Athens for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summers are often hot and between July and August temperatures can often exceed 35°C. Winters are relatively temperate at 14°C due to its Mediterranean climate.
The Acropolis of Athens
The Acropolis is a must see for visitors to Athens. The Parthenon the largest structure on the Acropolis were built in the 5th century. The term acropolis means “High City”. During times of invasion inhabitants of the area around the acropolis now known as Athens would seek refuge. Tours can visit the acropolis most day from 8 to 6-30 pm, this can differ depending on the season.
Athens and Olympic Games
Athens was awarded the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It would not be until 2004 that Athens would hold the Summer Olympics again. The successful bid to host the 2004 Athens Olympics helped, to once again boost Athens international profile. With support from the Greek government and EU much needed infrastructure projects like the new Athens international airport and expansion of the Athens metro systems were completed, in preparation for the games.
Piraeus- Connecting Athens to Europe
Piraeus is Greece's third largest city located 10 km southwest of Athens. Piraeus is the largest passenger port, Situated on the Saronic Gulf. The port welcomes about 20 million passengers each year and connects Athens with many other European destinations and offers daily connections for tourists and locals to the Greek islands.
