Cruises From Marbella, Spain

Marbella is a resort town in the heart of Spain’s Costa del Sol. It has become popular with celebrities in recent years and is known for its nightlife and luxurious atmosphere. However, there is much more to Marbella beyond the glitz and glamour. It’s made up of gorgeous beaches and buildings that perfectly embody the Costa del Sol. Much of the city is vibrant white with terracotta roofs, but you’ll see some bright pops of colour throughout Marbella’s Old Town. Tiled pedestrian laneways, bright flowers, and charming city squares add to the quaintness of the city. Throughout Marbella, there is great shopping that ranges from affordable boutiques to high-end designers. The city’s food scene is also impressive with lots of fresh seafood as the centrepiece. Fans of nightlife will love the variety of bars and nightclubs in Marbella, many of which are frequented by some of the world’s top DJs. While there is so much to do in Marbella, the town is smaller and quieter compared to neighbouring Malaga and Gibraltar, offering an authentically Spanish experience. Cruises out of Marbella are the perfect way to begin your journey through the Mediterranean.

Need to Know About Marbella Port

When taking a cruise out of Marbella, there are two cruise terminals you may depart from. Puerto Deportivo de Marbella is centrally located near the Old Town. Departing from the historic city centre, you can reach the cruise terminal in about 10 minutes. If you are driving to Marbella, there is a public parking garage close by on Calle Carlos Mackintosh. This cruise port is small and mainly features local and luxury cruise services.

If you are taking a larger cruise ship, you will most likely embark at Puerto Banus. This port is located 8 kilometres (5 miles) south of central Marbella. To reach your ship, you can catch the L1 or L4 buses from Marbella city centre. The bus stops one block from the terminal in Puerto Banus, which can be reached in three minutes on foot. If you have a car, public parking is available near the port at the Saba Aparcamientos parking garage.

If you would like to spend the night before the cruise at a hotel nearby, you’ll have plenty of options. If your ship is departing from Puerto Deportivo, there are several affordable hotels close by, including Hotel El Faro Marbella, Hotel Fuerte Marbella, and Apartamentos Princesa Playa. If you are boarding your ship at Puerto Banus, you could stay the night at the Banus Beach apartments or Hotel PYR a short walk away.

Things to do in Marbella Before You Embark

Playa del Cable

Marbella’s coastline consists of 20 different beaches. While each beach is unique, visitors to all of the beaches can enjoy soft sand, palm trees, beach bars, and views over the Mediterranean. Playa del Cable is located a 15-minute walk from Marbella’s Old Town and is particularly popular among the younger locals. The beach has a great atmosphere to it with lots of palm trees, lounge chairs under umbrellas, and a beach DJ who plays mellow music. Playa del Cable is also home to a beach bar that serves affordable food and drinks.

Explore the Old Town

To get a true feel for local life in Marbella, head to the city’s Old Town. Marbella’s Old Town truly embodies the Costa del Sol with a mix of vibrant white and colourful buildings, terracotta roofs, narrow tiled laneways, and lots of brightly-coloured flowers. The Old Town is steeped in history, and many of the buildings date back to the Renaissance period. Throughout the Old Town, you’ll also find several pedestrian squares, such as Plaza de los Naranjos, which are surrounded by local cafes and restaurants.

Sohail Castle

A short distance outside of Marbella, you can visit this scenic seaside castle. Sohail Castle was first built in 956 AD as a way to strengthen the defenses of the region. It has taken part in several events throughout history, most notably the Battle of Fuengirola in 1810. The castle faced some destruction and was left in ruin for years. In 1989, Sohail Castle was renovated into the gorgeous attraction that it is today. Visitors can walk through the castle grounds and admire its view over the Mediterranean. Concerts and events are also held at Sohail Castle regularly throughout the year, particularly in the summer.
