Best time to visit Tahiti & French Polynesia

The dry season is the best time to travel to Tahiti and French Polynesia as the weather is not as hot and rain is less likely. Tahiti's dry months are between May and October with the peak travel season falling in the middle of the dry season. Most travellers visit during school holidays which fall in July and August.

Tahiti

Tahiti is the largest island out of the 118 French Polynesian islands. It is a common misconception that Tahiti is made up of beautiful white sandy beaches and clear lagoons. In fact, beautiful Tahiti is famous for its waterfall-laden, shadowy mountains and unique black sand beaches.

Papeete - Tahiti's Capital

Papeete, Tahiti’s capital is the location of the French Polynesian airport. It is here that travellers enter French Polynesia and often take a boat to their holiday destination of choice such as Bora Bora or Moorea.

Although many tourists do not stay in Papeete long, Papeete is in fact a lovely seaside town. Papeete offers tourists the chance to trek through archaeological sites, discover endless river valleys and beautiful coastlines.

If you're lucky enough to find yourself in Papeete, why not take part in the festival of Heiva. Held in July, the festival is a spectacle of Tahitian dance and percussion. While on holidays on the island of Moorea, travellers must take the opportunity to swim with the dolphins at the Moorea Dolphin Centre or watch them from a tour boat in their natural habitat. Moorea tourists can also explore the mountain by air, foot or road.
